Lejre Museum

Located in the scenic hamlet of Gl. Lejre, Lejre Museum contains some of Denmark’s most exciting and significant archaeological finds from the Danish Iron and Viking Ages.

Lejre Home of the Scyldingas

According to legend the Scyldingas, Denmark’s first royal dynasty, had their centre of power here in the Iron and Viking Ages (500-1000 AD). The Scyldingas may be mythical kings, but archaeological finds at Lejre Museum indicate that Denmark’s cradle is Gl. Lejre. Explore traces of 650 m2 of royal halls, which are among the most well-known buildings from ancient times.

The museum’s Mythical Kings of Lejre exhibition uses archaeological finds, sound, lighting and an interactive design to provide an in-depth look at the history of Lejre and also presents the Mannerup Treasure up-close, Denmark’s largest find of ancient silver.

Visit Gl. Kongsgård

Gl. Kongsgård is affiliated with Lejre Museum and located just a few hundred meters further down the road. Featuring original furniture and other items from its previous inhabitants, the entire 300-year-old farm is nothing short of a museum object. Originally a tenant farm under Ledreborg Palace, it was a family farm from 1749 until the death of its last resident, Kirsten Nielsen, in 1959. A lively storyteller, Kirsten served as the custodian of Gl. Kongsgård, making it her life’s work to turn it into a combined home and museum.

Every Thursday from 1-4 pm during the summer months stop by the garden to hear good stories and enjoy coffee and cake.

Historical walks

During the summer various FREE walks take place in and around Gl. Lejre conducted by the museum’s skilled staff. The museum also does other events and is the venue of major events throughout the year.

Shop and café

End your visit with a stop at Lejre Museum’s shop and small café corner, which serves organic fairtrade Puro coffee, organic juice, smoothies and soft drinks from the brewery Naturfrisk Ørbæk Bryggeri, ice cream from Hansens Is and chocolate from local chocolate world champion Friis-Holm. Enjoy your purchases in the sun on the outdoor porch in the summer months.
